Howdy, all! As you know, every once in a while Disabled Travelers gets inspired by something from everyday life. Some of our best access guides have been kicked off by a news item, a viewer request, or even a picture. This time, it’s all of the above. I’d like to take a moment to point out a story that recently appeared on CNBC, and in the doing, we’ll talk about what’s next for Disabled Travelers over the coming weeks. Sound good? Join me for a quick tour of the “Best Places to Retire,” won’t you?

Thanks to travel writer Peter Greenberg (whose terrific travelogues and tips appeared once again in our last post) I like to keep tabs on what’s going on at the AARP. After all, quite a few of the most ardent disabled travelers are retirees or getting ready to retire soon. Well, if this describes you, you’re in luck: CNBC showcased The Best Places to Retire Outside the U.S. recently, drawing on research by AARP and input from International Living Magazine, the lifestyle ‘zine that’s been “Helping People Live and Retire Overseas Since 1979.” Topping the list is Costa Del Sol, Spain, followed by Cascais, Portugal.

Now, Disabled Travelers usually focuses on “short term” trips for you and your travel companions – not long-term relocations. But, thanks to a combination of economic factors and the better-than-ever internet research helping people achieve their travel dreams, it’s the best time in a generation to consider retiring abroad; and I, for one, just can’t help but get involved! Here’s CNBC’s complete list, with links to their take …

Now, I know what you might be thinking. Central and South America are not regions known for great accessibility. Wheelchair accessible attractions and handicapped hotels are generally few and fair between in these areas, inviting tropical climate aside. Well, I say, our next adventure is in front of us: Disabled Travelers is going to “go down the list” of CNBC’s Best Places to Retire and find out all we can about access there.

Heck, for all we know, we might end up with a whole new Best Places for Disabled Travelers to Retire list! So, tune in soon to as the DT blog takes in beautiful Argentina for the very first time. And if you’re a “retired DT,” or have found a place to live and love outside the U.S., be sure to write in and let us know! I’m always available here on the blog or by email!
